Can I borrow $75?

sokeri [recently expired TotalFark] 2005-03-22 04:07:21 AM
personally, I found the room service to be a little slow. but I have impossibly high standards.

Assgasket 2005-03-22 04:21:33 AM
Strangely, the rooms do bear a resemblence to the Lanai Suites at the Taj Mahal. Except not as seedy and worn.

That interior design gives me a headache. Way, way, way too busy.

robmilmel [TotalFark] 2005-03-22 04:26:23 AM
I refuse to stay in a hotel without mirrors on the celing!
I have standards- low ones, but standards nonetheless.

I guess that even though Dubai is Islamic, they can serve alcohol, since it's offshore.

morrisonsl 2005-03-22 06:02:56 AM
Doesn't matter where it is, all that matters when going to a bar in Dubai is that you're not a Muslim. As a furriner all you have to do is flash your passport, sometimes you don't even have to do that as they tend to assume white=infidel.

There are even liquor stores where non-Muslims can gain entry and purchase all kinds of booze to take home.

MsStressa 2005-03-22 08:11:34 AM
Rated 7-star by whom? It looks pretty, but in a Vegas-y sort of way. And where what is around it for fun when you leave the hotel?

the_rev [TotalFark] 2005-03-22 08:35:48 AM
I've seen that place on tv a couple of times and damn, does it ever look nice.

I think you can get a low-end room for about $700 USD per night. I looked it up once on their website, but I had a hell of a time trying to find a currency converter to figure out the US equivalent of the UAE money.

twoody [TotalFark] 2005-03-22 09:47:43 AM
This is a non story. 7 stars in dubai currency is only like $4.50 U.S.

Dancin_In_Anson [TotalFark] 2005-03-22 09:53:48 AM
No comparison to the greatest hotel ever to exist.

jkaoclobb 2005-03-22 10:26:52 AM
When is the Burj Dubai going to be finished?

bump 2005-03-22 10:27:44 AM
^ "Let's go Gobbling" - indeed.

I can't decide if I'm more impressed with the extensive use of wrought iron, waterbeds or the 8 tracks.

Omega Ohm 2005-03-22 10:28:29 AM
The dining room is hideous. They guy who designed the ceiling needs to have his eyes ripped out.

Teucer 2005-03-22 10:29:18 AM
Damn ay-rabs! Dunt they know ders only five stars?

Duh huhr.

Oh, hell. Let's all go gobblin'.

Javatrees 2005-03-22 10:29:45 AM
I would think that it cost more than $80 million US to build that...

Rye_ [TotalFark] 2005-03-22 10:31:07 AM

Good. Christ.

But noooooo, they can't POSSIBLY afford to up the oil production and lower the price, that would be TOO HARD. farkin arabs with their billion star hotels, I want my goddamn 99 cent gas back. Bomb it, glass parking lot.

perisoft 2005-03-22 10:35:31 AM
They rated it 7 stars themselves. I've can say I've got an eight star hotel in my apartment upstairs; that doesn't mean you'll get anything but a futon and EasyMac for two days.

I'd hit it at the Gobbler!

Princebobo 2005-03-22 10:38:03 AM
Nice that the Bin Laden family got the contract to build this shathole. More funding for terrorists courtesy of the Arab world. Hope a tsunami hits this craphole and turns it into a smouldering pile just like the WTC.

VinDiesel 2005-03-22 10:38:05 AM
tunnelhead - Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Cool pictures, but were they real or PS? I can't remember, but I think PS.

Pretty building, but ostentatious. I'd prefer an old New York or Paris hotel. Not to mention I would much prefer being in New York or Paris than a desert country where people want to cut off my head.

crazygecko 2005-03-22 10:38:27 AM
It's a very nice hotel, very pretty to look at... too bad they plan on tearing it down.

dynayellow 2005-03-22 10:40:19 AM
Exactly... seven stars according to them. I doubt AAA or Fordor's sent a checker over there.

tort_feasor 2005-03-22 10:40:58 AM
Isn't the star system based on the number of towels, the wine cellar, and other crap like that? If so, this place must have human bidets.

twoody [TotalFark] 2005-03-22 10:42:37 AM

At least this country has some foresight to see that their oil reserves will not last for ever so they are trying to open a tourism market.

CPennypacker [TotalFark] 2005-03-22 10:54:19 AM
Too bad you have to go to the UAE to stay in it.

ElBarto79 2005-03-22 10:58:13 AM
How the heck did they build that thing for 80 million US?? The Borgata they just built in AC cost 1 billion. Maybe they only pay their workers 50 cents an hour.

SherKhan 2005-03-22 10:58:59 AM
Ali Baba I'm impressed
Though I'll never be a guest
Not just 'cause it's far away
Also 'cause I couldn't pay.

Silva [TotalFark] 2005-03-22 10:59:15 AM
To all those knocking the UAE, they are probably the most westernized of the middle-eastern nations and Dubai has been a popular tourist destination for Europeans for a long time.

Nightsweat 2005-03-22 11:00:10 AM
Ain't no such thing as a 7 star hotel.

And stars refer to the amenities, not the quality, unless you're talking Michelin restaurant stars, in which case a one star restaurant is very good, two is great, and three is outstanding.

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

Yeah you'd be insane to knock such an ostentatious display of wealth...By the way Turkey isn't doing too bad considering they aren't sitting on black gold.

jposkey 2005-03-22 11:02:48 AM
Fark is so out of date. The 7-star has been topped by one in Abu Dhabi (8-star? Or will they go straight to 9?) Emirates Palace (pops). Less then 400 rooms, but 128 kitchens/pantries. A staff of 10 to keep all the chandeliers clean.

hmmm... my city seems to be showing a fair bit on Fark these days.. not that there's anything wrong with that : )

Halfmast Trousers

i've asked a few Muslim friends of mine about that rumor - there is no such thing as serving alcohol being A-OK when offshore

perisoft
They rated it 7 stars themselves

dude, i personally am not a big fan of the opulence... but all said and done.. you have to see it to believe it... a good few people who have travelled around do rate this place as pretty much up there...

jkaoclobb

Man, apparently the Burj Dubai has a competitor coming soon... Madinat Al Arab... claimed to exceed the Burj Dubai too! goddamn... this place will be unrecognizable in 5-8 years... i go for a drive every weekend around the main centres of development... the rate of completeion is astounding.... now if only i could win the lottery 10 times over... i might have enuff to spring for a decent house in one of these joints : (

anyway... i gotta go... work's done (its 8:00pm) , and im off to the gym.. i HATE cardio! : /

/btw - fwiw - the pix were not PS'd...gah!

Actually the Bin Laden construction company has little to do with Osama now, it is the same family but they don't talk to junior anymore. AFAIK.

Well, to be fair, among the amenities are top-notch ball washers on the driving range.

Here's a pic:
