This is one satire article that could actually have some truth to it.

It rang true, if not funny.

Whether it's true or not, the program sucks. My boss asked me to use this Microsoft spyware stuff. It found 2 registry entries from spyware. Removed it. User logged back in and the moment she opened Internet exploder, pop ups, homepage changed. Ran spybot for S&G's, found 57 entries, cleaned em up. User yada yada yada....IE works again.

always run independant (non MS) spy sweepers AFTER you run windows update or MS antispy.

/gotta cleanup after the cleanup, of course

wickedMule 2005-01-19 10:54:46 AM
Well yeah, you want to attack the root of the problem whenever possible...

timtoews2000 2005-01-19 10:56:39 AM
I submitted an article similar to this yesterday, non-satire. When you download this software it sends a file to your system that checks to see if your copy of windows is legit, and if it isn't, sends you to a page where you can buy windows, before proceeding with the anti-spy download.

DrZombie 2005-01-19 10:57:15 AM
Is this true or not? I'm unfamiliar with this site, so I don't know if it's satire or not, although the "tough shiat" comment seems to lend itself to being the former.

skinink 2005-01-19 10:57:16 AM

That is pretty good satire.

Now, can we get to the point, that computers were never meant to be treated as an 'appliance', and aside from the problems Windows has, a majority of users should be required to take a basic Computing class before they even use a computer.

Sorry, just found out someone pissed in my coffee this morning. What's worse, it was me that did it.

"I tried to check the weather this morning and all my little blue "e" icons were missing. I couldn't get to the Internet at all. I guess I'll have to get a new computer," said Windows XP user Graham Newton.

I'm pretty sure this guy works in my department.

asciibaron 2005-01-19 11:00:05 AM
i just finished a scan with the product. it does better than adaware. time to fire up spybot s&d.

would be great if MS had a tool that uninstalled the O/S and installed FreeBSD instead.

/does not compute

I saw the story on slash a week or so ago. it was a direct link so I had to answer NO questions to get it.

heh. the only way to fly.

MS announced, such as it is, that this Spytool may be the first of a family of tools they charge for, at least for the maintenance updates. With SP's to follow. So if you look at it, MS actually now has a real incentive to ignore problems and continue to pump out crap. They can sell you the 'fix'.

BTW the MS/Giant tool is extremely difficult to uninstall, almost as hard as XP/SP1-RC1.

ATTENTION ANYONE GETTING READY TO BUY A COMPUTER FOR YOUR HOME:

Get a mommafarking Macintosh and save yourself countless hours of misery. Unless you need to run a friggin' Exchange server or some other 1000-user network YOU DON'T NEED TO GIVE BILL GATES ANY OF YOUR MONEY.

PLEASE LET'S STOP THE MADNESS.

I used this antispyware product when it was owned by Giant. I was extremely happy with it then as it caught a lot of things that AdAware and Spybot missed. It was also much more user friendly for the less tech savy. I haven't had a chance to download the MS version, and although it looks identical I have a feeling they added their own 'special' touch.

I used to have to run Spybot at least 3 times a week (along with AGV anti-virus and HiJack This) to keep my machine clean. (I'm a little anal about things running on my lappy without my permission...)

Since I switched to Firefox 2 months ago, I have not had a single virus or spyware entry.

Even if you're not savvy, get Firefox. You'll be glad you did.

...computers were never meant to be treated as an 'appliance', and aside from the problems Windows has, a majority of users should be required to take a basic Computing class before they even use a computer.

Amen, brother. I don't work in IT, but I'm the office Computer guru when the IT people are busy. People come to me with the strange problems that only happen when you fiddle around where you shouldn't, or don't know what you're doing. If I wasn't so busy doing my actual work(and posting of FARK) I would write up a lesson plan for "advanced computing" to propose to my manager...

/They don't call me ComputerKing fer nothin'.
//Of course, they call me Inspector Gadget, too...
///Admitted Tech freak.

If Mozilla Firefox were a girl, you'd hit it. Miss IE has STDs.

some_wild-eyed_8-foot_tall_maniac 2005-01-19 11:20:22 AM
Clavis-

Miss IE has STDs.

Yeah, that's cause ActiveX makes her take it in the pooper all the time.

I sent this article to my boss and he got a kick out of it.. but we don't believe the removal of I.E is true due to the fact that BBspot is known its lack of seriousness. Plus, it says in the article "tough shiat" ... I mean if this is true i'd like to see a reliable website stating it.. but im with you guys.. i hate microsoft as much as the next computer technician... just wondering

Dave in Va
LOL

"other 1000-user network YOU DON'T NEED TO GIVE BILL GATES ANY OF YOUR MONEY."

Yes, I'd feel so much better giving it to Steve Jobs...

If antivirus and antispyware programs really did their job right, they would remove Microsoft Windows from the computer altogether.

Now class, let's review:

because they hired THE funny Onion writer.

j00dei sensei 2005-01-19 11:32:23 AM
yeah hijackthis is probably the best for spyware removal, but also the most lethal.

and if everyone gave their money to steve jobs, wouldn't that sorta turn macs into the pcs of the future? i'm pretty sure if everyone used macs than these problems would switch over to macs. ahhhh, i love cs source.

grateful_net 2005-01-19 11:34:35 AM
Eon Blue: I have a feeling they added their own 'special' touch.

I saw at least one ref to 'giant' (titlebar or something in a gui screen). M$ wasn't good at finding/replacing all occurrences of the previous name..

imnotgeorgebest 2005-01-19 11:35:22 AM
finally a microsoft product that works.
