That creates an enormous wave of pressure and heat that essentially sucks the air out of the cave like a vacuum cleaner, collapsing the lungs of, and causing internal hemorrhages to, those unfortunate enough to be inside.

mmm. sounds fun.

EdgeCrusher 2002-03-03 08:54:23 PM
we burnt down your white house

SGF 2002-03-03 08:54:52 PM
Looks like Osama may have kidney trouble afterall...

Isn't America great?

"That creates an enormous wave of pressure and heat that essentially sucks the air out of the cave like a vacuum cleaner, collapsing the lungs of, and causing internal hemorrhages to, those unfortunate enough to be inside."

Isn't that the same as the Daisy Cutter bomb that they were using a few months ago?

Quick1 2002-03-03 08:56:44 PM
we burnt down your white house

And we set fire to Quebec. Point?

Anyway, bad-ass is definitely the right term for this bomb. Remember to remind me not to piss of the USA.

TorqueTube 2002-03-03 08:56:50 PM
Kick ASS!!!!

Quick1 2002-03-03 08:57:37 PM
By the way, the Star Tribune is the Minneapolis paper. The rag coming out of St. Paul is known as the Pioneer Press.

IMJack 2002-03-03 08:58:14 PM
It's a different kind of fuel-air bomb. What's so new?

captainstudd 2002-03-03 08:59:50 PM
That was by far the coolest thing i have read all night....

OBB 2002-03-03 08:59:56 PM
Wow, it's just like a Fuel Air Explosive, except that it's a guided weapon.... betcha they could've put those to good use back in 'Nam

Ziess 2002-03-03 09:00:22 PM
UNBELIEVABLE! The shiat we create never ceases to amaze me. Good Job brother- who works in Naval Weapons!

vegasj 2002-03-03 09:01:02 PM
no, the Daisey cutter literaly blew up anything within 2 football fields. This one basicly implodes (my guess, all they said is the solid explosive dust particles are ignited) an implosion that uses up ever last bit of oxygen in the cave ... I read something more detailed on it.... lemme find it

vegasj 2002-03-03 09:02:53 PM
shhhhh people .... lemme find the article I read before...OBB what I read, said that this is VERY similar to the liguid fuel bombs used in Nam... it's more advanced I guess 'cause of the solid fuel dust

GXL 2002-03-03 09:03:02 PM
Has anyone else read that short story by, um, i think it was John Carpenter, about this gas bomb that released this gas that softened your tissue, so when you inhale, the air ripped through your lungs? anyone? Sorry for that reall long run-on sentence.

Chooq 2002-03-03 09:03:32 PM
I called this a few days earlier in a post before this was ever known. I AM SO SMART!!!!!!! :(

OBB 2002-03-03 09:04:22 PM
Well from what I gathered, the FAE sucks all of the oxygen from around where it's about to explode, then blows up... this operates on a similar premise.... but true Vegasj, it's not exactly like a Daisy Cutter.

shlabotnik 2002-03-03 09:05:32 PM
I thought this one doesn't damage the caves like the daisy cutter does...

Mattt 2002-03-03 09:05:34 PM
this is freakin insane!

yahmean 2002-03-03 09:05:35 PM
From www.globalsecurity.org ...

All about the DAISY CUTTER!

Have a great day,
Yahmean

OBB 2002-03-03 09:06:06 PM
Ok, VegasJ, glad we got that all settled... now back to giggling about the cool effects of the bomb!

shlabotnik 2002-03-03 09:07:59 PM
"As heavy as a Volkswagen, these ``thermobaric' bombs are designed to suck the oxygen out of a cave or tunnel, killing even earthworms deep underground."

PETA will be protesting this in 5...4...3...

Mugen 2002-03-03 09:08:12 PM
Kill everyone and ask question later. Nice thinking.

Crotchrocket Slim 2002-03-03 09:09:19 PM
I just hope we use it only on assholes that deserve it, and not drop them willy-nilly on anyone we don't like, like what a generals would have had us done with nukes right after the Cold War got going.

Oh, and Quick1, I didn't know you went to the U of MN. You from Minnesota originally?

Quick1 2002-03-03 09:11:12 PM
Yes, and I'm still going there.

Mycatsbreathsmellslikecatfood 2002-03-03 09:12:33 PM
oh god wont someone PLEASE think of the earthworms????

NotSoCreative 2002-03-03 09:12:46 PM
Now I know what I want for Christmas.

SGF 2002-03-03 09:13:57 PM
Consuming the oxygen is just part of the picture. From what I understand, the real danger for the cave dwellers is the pressure differential, between their internal organs and the lowered athmospheric pressure. The bends, only super nasty faster, and without the water...

BTW if the bombs are Volkswagen sized, couldn't they drop Pontiac Azteks instead?

Killemall 2002-03-03 09:14:49 PM
I believe the Russians tried this during their war in Afghanistan alot sooner than we "invented" it...

grimcity 2002-03-03 09:16:28 PM
I bet it would feel good to get all of the air sucked out of your pants. They should make a consumer version.

severin 2002-03-03 09:16:29 PM
Sure would suck to be the target of that bomb!

</stupid pun>

cheeze 2002-03-03 09:18:10 PM
rumsfield: what do you mean we caused an earthquake?
soldier: yes sir, that large quake today, that was us.
rumsfield: well, lets just play it off like we weren't doing anything. any chance of covering it up?
bush: cover up? lemme get some of that action!!
cheney: you guys better not be blowing up my oil buddies.

and the media goes on like nothing happened.

Dick Fitzwell 2002-03-03 09:18:31 PM
Kick ass!!!

g0dzilla 2002-03-03 09:19:02 PM
The trick is to get a pressure wave INSIDE the cave structure rather than just at the mouth. Think of it in simple terms:
You have a rat in a coke bottle on the table...
1. A daisy cutter is the equivalent of an M-80 outside the bottle
2. The thermobaric is the equivalent of dropping a cherry bomb inside the bottle

321keyturn 2002-03-03 09:21:43 PM
Wish we had a few thousand of them.

And in a totally unrelated item, Posh Spice, her husband, and their baby have just been declared official Hindu gods!
(wotta world)

SGF 2002-03-03 09:23:49 PM
As long as we're throwing around the cheeesy puns, does anyone think al Qaeda will experience a leadership vacuum because of this new bomb?

vegasj 2002-03-03 09:26:07 PM
Godzilla's close, but I swear, the crap I read on it... show'd a little make shift video....dropping it inside...(or stearing it in, which they said CAN be done) or even just at the mouth of the cave.... resulted in the same effects.... They tested that fuker less than 100 miles from me man, ya gotta believe me....heyyyyy, maybe it was our LOCAL news that covered it.....

CrowTRobot 2002-03-03 09:26:23 PM
Just what we needed. Right.

phydeux 2002-03-03 09:29:58 PM
my peni- I mean bomb is bigger than your bomb

SSBN 2002-03-03 09:30:09 PM
More info about our thermobaric friend:

OBB 2002-03-03 09:31:46 PM
Of course! What was I thinking?? There's gotta be thousands of innocent soldiers hiding in those tunnels... better to kill them quickly with one bomb then send in a bunch of our friendly troops and rack up a bunch of casualties on our side. War has some dastardly things that happen in it, but thems the breaks.

mohican 2002-03-03 09:33:13 PM
Questionable "cool" tag....

SpecialOpz 2002-03-03 09:33:20 PM
In a recent interview, General Norman Schwartzkopf was asked if he didn't think there was room for forgiveness toward the people who have harboured and abetted the terrorists who perpetrated the September 11th attacks on America. His answer was classic Schwartzkopf. He said, "I believe that forgiving them is God's function. Our job is simply to arrange the meeting."

Gotta love it!

Fat Bob Smith 2002-03-03 09:33:24 PM
In other words, the military has developed a gigantic penis-pump bomb

dev2r 2002-03-03 09:37:08 PM
scary

SGF 2002-03-03 09:38:46 PM
I think Ross Perot should be consulted on this one... Does this mean that following the huge sucking sound, all the terrorist jobs will move to Mexico?

severin 2002-03-03 09:39:26 PM
Im sure this weapon will help take the wind out of any al Qaeda resistence!

</stupid pun again>

btw nice link SSBN

Tremor Christ 2002-03-03 09:40:39 PM
"penis-pump bomb" -- now those are words that just don't go together.

SoftRockRenegade 2002-03-03 09:41:24 PM
killemall: i heard the same thing on NPR. apparently it wasn't entirely effective for the russians.
